Cannot argue the usefulness of a green laser pointer. If I had had one years ago I probably would not have given up on my DOB. Just got tired of sore knees and strained neck.

And I'm sure there is a danger to aircraft, but apparantly you can't blow them out of the sky....

Just a warning to anyone purchasing an inexpensive laser: I decided to have a back up in case the first decided to go out. The first one I bought was from Amazon for under $20.00 and came with a battery and a charger. I tried to get another but it is no longer available...so I went to ebay. I found one for about the same price but without a battery and charger, the advertisement showed a huge beam seen from across town from a high building I should have known right then but I went ahead and bought it anyway. In pitch dark I couldn't even see a beam...what a joke! I contacted ebay and got my money back very quickly. The latest I purchased is the real deal, it also has a battery with charger and it's also truly adjustable, which is easier on the eye's by making a softer beam. This one cost $27.00 with shipping so not a bad deal at all! There are truly good cheap lasers out there but unfortunately there are a lot of ripoffs and you have to be discerning, watch out for the slick advertising that claim they can pop balloons from across the room and light camp fires. Sure, there are powerful lasers out there but they cost a pretty penny! I don't know if the ones I have can burn anything or not, all I know is they make my life with the Dob a bit of heaven! Happy night sky!

Even when watching the news channels you see them pointing the lasers directly at the cameras. Seems to be the weapon of choice at these recent protests.

Yeah, the laser seems to keep the attention of my grand kids at peak level. Unfortunately they end up wanting to play with it and and a squabble usually ensues! Happy night sky!

A couple of years ago, we had a real safety problem at McCarin airport in Vegas. There's a pretty dark park adjacent to the approach, and some stargazers were inadvertently hitting the incoming planes. A media "blitz" and attention by Las Vegas Metro seems to have stopped the use of green lasers in the park.

It really does tic me off when I hear reports like this for two reasons. First, all of us in the amateur astronomy community should understand and practice safe laser use. Second, it just adds ammo to the "we don't like people using lasers" crowd. It makes it that much more difficult for those of us who use our lasers for the initial alignment of our go-to mounts. It's one of the reasons I tend to stay away from star parties and amateur astronomy gatherings unless it is with friends of mine or people I already know. Yes, I have a RACI finder scope but it gets very little use. Anyone who has ever used a laser for alignment realizes how much easier it makes it.

Yeah, it only takes a few irresponsible people to ruin it for everybody. I use my laser as if it were a fire arm, I never turn it on unless it's pointed straight up and only after I know there's nothing moving in the sky. My wife and I were out on the on the boat the other night and someone was flashing a laser all over and the lake very close to an airport. I'm sure it won't be long before they're banned and that's really sad because it's the most useful tool I have. Happy night sky!
