I love music (play guitar, etc.), but when I'm stargazing I like the quiet.

Have you ever noticed that when you're out driving around in an area of unfamiliar territory with the radio on that you suddenly turn the radio down (assuming that it is on) to concentrate on where you're going?

It's a biological response that has to do with the evolution of our brain as it relates to audio and visual input received. Audio and visual inputs are processed in different areas of our brain, but as great as our brain is we have a very difficult task with multitasking. Have you seen how much people suck at driving while they talk on their cell phone? As you divert your attention to one modality (listening to your friend on the phone), your brain will detract from another modality (visual input as you drive).

So my answer to your question is no. You can train your brain to multitask even the least seeming complex operations, but it's already hard enough for the human eye to discern colour in darkness due to our biological evolution. Furthermore keeping an ear up around me while I'm in the middle of nowhere is also good practice of safety.

Torture technique 101: Bright lights and loud sound. I used to do it to my siblings early in the mornings ... it's not just because they hate getting up in the morning, but the sudden influx of bright lights and loud sounds is maddening

Hey now I never said it wasn't possible, it just makes it more difficult.
