I would have to think back about 15 years, but I think it was M81 and M82 together. I saw them through a cheep Tasco 60mm Refractor, f/11 through a cheep Huygen EP at low power,( can't remember the ep's FL.)
I sold the 60mm Refractor after a couple of years, but soon after I bought an 8 in. Dob. and later a 10 in. Dob. through which I have seen and enjoyed hundreds of DSOs for many years.

I'm another M42 guy, but it was through binoculars. In fact, when I first saw it, I thought it was a smudge on one of the bino lenses and actually took them down to clean them. Put them back up and it was still there.

Then I got a scope and saw it and Jupiter on the same night.

It was back in the late 70's so I am not sure, but I think it was M57, The Ring Nebula in Lyra.
