I got my first telescope in the week before the recent transit of Venus. It was cloudy until the 6th June when through scattered cloud I got to view the transit, one of the shallowest sky events I'll probably see, which was the incentive for my telescopic investment. That done it was time to turn to some DSO observing.

So that night I turned the scope skyward into Scorpius for my first serious night sky telescopic viewing. I caught NGC 6231 followed by M4, M6 and M7 in my first couple of hours of night sky telescopic viewing - a pretty good start I thought.

A couple of days ago (27 July) the clouds parted sufficiently for me to get out of bed at 4 am and from my balcony looking due east over the Pacific the TV 85 grabbed magnificent and detailed views of M42 (Orion Nebula) M45 (Pleiades), NGC 1977 & NGC 1980 all serving as a stunning backdrop for a brilliant crescent of Venus and Jupiter all in a descending line from the Pleiades.... the best mix of shallow and deep sky anyone could ask for!

Last night rounded it out with M8 (Lagoon Nebula) and NGC 6559 caught at 6.30 pm from my balcony as I fired up the barbeque for dinner.... the grab and go urban night sky viewing capability of the TV 85 has me astounded.

The Ring Nebula...at least it was the first one I could recognize as something not a star. I've Learned since then, not everything in the sky is bright as a street lamp. I'd probably not found it except for the Intelliscope finding it for me.

Firday, scopes first light: M31 and M76
I saw a few other things but no confirmation on what they were. M31 held my gaze for most of the 2 hours I got before clouded out.

Actually saw the Lagoon Nebula last Friday from our dark site. It fit perfectly into my FOV (ES82 24mm 2", 10"XTi). It was awesome! I was expecting a greenish tinge, but it was actually more a bluish. I was also able to catch it's nearby neighbor, the Triffid Nebula. Any idea why it would be blueish rather than greenish?

It was Ring Nebula, M57. About 25 years ago... I saw it through my first 110mm reflector. It was amazing.

Since M42 is most recognized even for not astronomy fans and also is easy to spot for a beginner, it was also my first DSO through my scope. It was also the first DSO through a pair of binoculars . I though it was a very high cloud but my wife told me what it was.
