Mine was M42. I had a Christmas gift dept store scope as a kid and was never able to find it M42. I spent many nights searching (undoubtebly in the wrong spot, because even in dept store scopes it should be visible). So when I got my first 'real' scope, my 6SE, I knew M42 would again be the prey of my hunt. I was determined to find it with my new scope. This would be the deciding factor of whether buying the scope was a good idea given my failures with my childhood scope. So I got my scope alligned, pressed M42, and prepared for a serious hunt. Eye to the eyepeice, and there it was, dead center! So bright, so beautiful, so easy to see! My hunt took about 10 seconds (waiting for it to slew after alligning) thanks to the GoTo. The thought of returning my scope was gone forever after that moment!
I'm always learning, so PLEASE correct me if I sound misinformed. I will not be offended if you tell me I'm wrong. Thanks for your patience!

My first DSO was also M42. It was an awesome sight to see and I sure spent a long time looking at it.

Me too. Seeing them both at the same time made me confident that I was seeing actual galaxies and not just a smudge on my eyepiece
