That bark alarm is the reason I thought a dog would be a good idea.
When I saw a mountain lion before, the dog with me that time usually went after anything.
When it was a mountain lion, he did not make a sound. He froze.

I often wondered about that when I go up to the local mountains.
Mosts Cats look for small game and stalk their pray.
their not looking for a human encounter and usually try to avoid contact.
just the same you should think ahead.
Most of the time I'm inside my truck and that offers a little protection but the best thing is to be aware of your environment.
Look for tracks (they are very distinctive) before you set up for the evening and limit your munchies to quick snacks with little oder in sealed containers.
I try to set up where there is no signs of wild life the cat would consider dinner.
instead of thinking weapon which rarely is effective in a blindside attack think on the order of one of those air horns you would buy for a football game and keep it on your belt.
that will buy you ample time to take cover.

One should always think about carrying a weapon. I wouldn't rely on a blast horn to save my life. In desperation, a hungry animal isn't going to care about anything but having a tasty meal.

I'm from the upper Midwest and a deer hunter but here in California its not OK to hang my 30.06 in the rear window of my pickup and they really frown on concealed weapons here.
Those who are capable of using firearms effectively and safely are not exempt from the law.
I would have no problems in defending my self or friends and family but a point should stand out that statistical ,wild animal attach's are rarely fended off from the person under attach while armed.
In many cases shots fired at a determined hungry or vicious animal does little to slow the attack down if not escalate the aggression.
I have personally witnessed this in bear country.
Its best to frighten the animal if at all possible and if there is no other choice then make it a good shot between the lookers with a very powerful gun I might add because the attack will not stop a wounded animal.
