Default News Alert! News Conference on Astrobiology Discovery, Dec. 2

AstroNews - News Conference on Astrobiology Discovery, Dec. 2 - November 29th 2010
NASA will hold a news conference at 2 p.m. EST on Thursday, Dec. 2, to discuss an astrobiology finding that will impact the search for evidence of extraterrestrial life. Astrobiology is the study of the origin, evolution, distribution, and future of life in the universe.

I said elsewhere that things are quiet before a big announcement - the above item is the only press release for today.

Watch the skies and mark my words - there are some important announcements and discoveries coming up in the next few days

(oh, and while you're at it, beware the ides of March )

Is it too early for them to have samples from Hayabusa? I suppose even if it wasn't, it would JAXA announcing findings from that.

Any speculation out there as to what it might be? RNA/DNA found locally in the solar system, an extra-solar planet with water detected in the atmosphere, Transformers just ate Spirit, etc?

Speculation is all we'll get until thursday. Unless somebody's prepared to go as far as a rumour.

Personally, I'd like it to be a mars rover finding a fossil. Or perhaps life found here on earth in a totally unexpected place.

My money is on a capsule found on the Moon by Neil Armstrong that contains the cryogenically frozen body of an extra-terrestrial. This explains why Mr Armstrong never does interviews and very few public appearances any more

I think the ET replacing Buzz Aldrin better explains his rap.

Just a little speculation here, but one of the participants in the conference, James Elser, is involved with NASA's Follow the Elements program. Steve Benner's group also investigates biosignatures (from wikipedia)
    Astrobiology

The exploration of planets other than Earth seeks signs of non-terrean life. The Benner group has worked to identify molecular structures likely to be universal features of living systems regardless of their genesis, and not likely products of non-biological processes. These are "bio-signatures", both for terrean-like life and for "weird" life forms. As a member of the NASA Astrobiology Institute (with the University of Washington), and in collaborations with the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and the University of Michigan, the Benner group is designing the next generation of probes to Mars.
From that along with other participants, I'm going to guess they found biomarkers either on another solar system body, or in an extra solar atmosphere.

The big announcement is the Opportunity rover ran into a martian cow pie, and is now unfortunately trapped. But good news is we discovered the remains of life on Mars.
