Certainly, chances of another intelligent species out there are trmendous. Just a matter of time, before they find us, or we find them.

I don't really think there are distant species in the distant galaxies, If there were signs of life in the distant galaxies, the astronomers/scientists would know right away that there are signs of life in the distant galaxies. By the way, it's a good thought to think about.

NASA and other groups have started to look for "life as we don't know it". That is to say, instead of looking for life that would resemble humanoids or animals, we are looking for life that may take other forms that are more compatible with environments like those found on icey worlds like Calisto (moon of Jupiter). Astronomy website has some pretty good articles regarding this.

I'm afraid we're going to have to stick closer to home for this one. There are nearly 200 million stars in our own galaxy to explore, and quite possibly it will turn out that one or more of them will have planets that give off signs of life.
As to other galaxies, not a chance. The nearest one is over 2 million light years away, and even the most sophisticated telescopes can resolve only a very few individual stars in those island universes. Examining them closely enough to actually detect signs of life would take a technology on a scale unimaginable to us today. Maybe you could do it with a telescope the size of Manhattan built on the far side of the moon. But I wouldn't wait up for it.
