Si si, sono vissuto in Italia per quasi sette anni. Pero' il mio Italiano e un po' arruginato. Si come parlo tre lingue, ormai non tutte e tre sono arruginate!

Kevin, don't worry we'll teach you!

oh yeah, he got the song right no problem. There's nothing like an Italian song, the sound of the words and the meaning of the songs can't be matched.

How many "dialetti" are there in Italy? I remember, although it's a small country, everywhere I went people had a different one. There were a lot only in the region I lived, and sometimes they were like totally different languages. I for one don't speak any "dialetto" (don't even know how to say that word in English). I speak only the legal Italian that are required to be taught in schools.

There must be at least 18 dialects, one per region. I remember once seeing in the Rizzoli bookstore in Manhattan that they publish regular size dictionaries that translate from/to italian and the various dialects: the dialetti are so different that dictionaries are needed, it's not just the pronunciation that is different (like the american regional accents). For instance, I'm from Rome and I can only catch a few words of neapolitan when they speak it fast, although Naples is only two hours away from Rome.

My friends didn't speak in any dialects with me because they knew I didn't understand. It's really like a complete other language. My best friend there was from Napoli, and sometimes he spoke his dialect just to see my reaction, which was always complete silence and a "WTF?" like face, followed by scratching my head.

Rome, can you believe that in seven years living in Italy I didn't take the time to visit Rome? I'm going back there someday. At least I visited Venice a couple of times, which was about an hour from home.

With a name like Bandolin, I figured you were from the Venetian region. I've been to Venice a few times, the last one with my wife and daughter: we all loved it, everyone should go at least once in their lives.
