    Default Moderation?

Hi all. I just tried to post a question about binoculars, but got a message that a moderator would have to approve my post before it could appear. This sort of censorship is pretty unusual in online forums, in my experience.

Junior member/new member "probation" related moderation works very well here, one of the nicer aspects of this forum - keeps the number of trolls, spammers, ne'er do wells down.

The moderation goes away after a variable number of postings....

I like the moderation as well, normally there is always a mod on so the post would be approved pretty quickly.
But this cust down on any spam entering the forum, which is rampant on many others.

It doesn't surprise me to hear that there are reasons for your moderation policies. People always have reasons for censorship, otherwise they wouldn't be practicing it. It just struck me, after being told "we're a friendly bunch", as incongruous that my first posting would be censored. How friendly is that, really?

Me? I'm a linguist, teaching at the University of Hawaii. I'm no sort of an astronomer, but I'm trying to learn something about beginner's equipment in order to pick out my wife's Christmas present.

I won't complain any more, for a while.

Yes, the first couple of posts do get caught in the net. It is recognized that a dolphin has been trapped, the dolphin is then set free and not trapped again.
Analogy aside, the forum would otherwise be riddled with the likes of "Nike Shoes at Discount Prices!!" I know that you are already aware of this reasoning, but how does the nature of the forum as a whole come into question?
You quoted "we're a friendly bunch". This is a fact independent of any moderation tactics.

Welcome to the forum Greg. What heavenly objects (other than yourself of course!!) is your wife interested? What does she like to view in the sky? If you have answered these questions in another thread, I will read it there.

Would it? I recently joined and started posting at the Cloudy Nights forum, I didn't have to go through a probationary censorship period, yet I don't see spam postings over there.

Thank you. I've heard her mention Orion --- what else, I don't know.
