Hello, I'm George and I have been into Astro since I was 14, but with a huge break in time from then until I bought my C8 in '83. I have to admit that I have not used it as much as I should. It is an old orange tube with the old tripod. And lugging it around (I move a lot) and setting it up is not worth the results. The OTA is good, but the mount and tripod s u c k.

I'm going to sell it in the coming months to buy a Astro-tech 6" RC and a Meade LXD75 mount. I want it for Astrophotography. I read a review of the 8" and if I could afford it I would consider going for it, but they complained about the focuser sagging. I suspect it will be less of a concern with the 6". Here is the image that convinced me to get this scope.

    /image/111842074 on pbase.

I am pretty sure of the OTA, but I don't know much about the mount. I could use some advice about the Meade LXD75. I weighs 50 lbs. and I am going to mount less than 20 lbs on it. Opinions please! Opps, I just found search.

I'm glad to be here and I think that I will find some fine people here.
    Thank you,

    --
    George

I want to photograph DSOs and Planets, but I also like tight globular clusters and double stars. I have changed my plan a little. I think I am going to get the Meade AR-5 AT for $999. I still have the Astrotech 6" RC in mind, but I have heard that the AR-5 is very good. I have also heard that the AR-5 may not be the best scope on the LDX75 mount mostly because of the torque with the longer tube than the RC. I'm new at this although I have an old C8, so any advice will be very helpful.
It looks like I was right about finding some fine people here. Thank you everyone for saying Hello.

Hi George .... I have the ar5 and use it with a celestron CG5 mount ... The 5in refractor is not the best choice for astrophotography ....There is a little chromatic aberation with these achro scopes ...And you are right , these refractors are loooong scopes ...My ar is 4ft. long ...When using it at the zeneth , even with the tripod extended all the way you get a kink in your neck just because of the angle ....Get as much aperture as you can afford ...Heck , you could buy a mount and use your orange tube on it ...

More change in plans. Now, I have decided to reserect the C8 on the LDX75 mount. The AR and the AT RC are gone, perhaps not forever. I'm also looking at a crawford focuser from Moonlight. The one that will accept a Celsetron .63 focal reducer/field flattener. I have a Celestron Plossl eyepiece set and plan to get at least two Baader Hyperion eyepieces.
