    Default Complete Newbie here!

    Hello all,

    Just registered on this forum.

I am 43 and I live in Saguenay, Quebec, Canada. My girlfriend has often expressed the wish to look at the stars and that we should get a telescope. I thought it was a good idea and in fact I had been thinking about it myself for a long time. I figured now was as good a time as any, so after researching extensively on the internet, I decided to get her one for Christmas. I settled on a Orion XT8i and now I can't wait for it to get here.

I am looking forward to learning more about the universe we live in, and many clear nights with my girlfriend.

My next challenge is to build a portable platform so the Dobsonian base can sit on something nice and level anywhere we decide to go. I hope to find a few designs here as well.

I am a member on a few forums including ST-Owners.com (Honda Sport touring motorcycles), Geocaching.com (high tech treasure hunts) RC Universe and RC Canada (model airplanes and helis), VWVortex (Volkswagen enthusiasts) and now this astronomy forum. I am sure I will have a lot of questions to ask the gurus, and I appreciate the chance we have now to reach so many knowledgeable people on so many subjects all over the world.

Welcome to the forums. You're going to love your new scope. As to a portable platform, you don't really need to build anything at all. Just get a tarp to put down on the ground to keep the base away from the dew. Or get a piece of solid plywood big enough to put the scope on but small enough so that you don't continually step on it when you're walking around aiming at the stars. And it doesn't have to be all that level either. Since it has 3 legs and is an altazimuth mount, getting it perfectly level shouldn't be a problem.
HOWEVER, I notice that it's an XT8i, an Intelliscope. Perhaps some of the owners of this particular scope can say whether it needs to be level for the intelliscope feature to work.
    Anyone? Anyone?

As I understand.. it does need to be level. I defer to the XTi owners of course!

Welcome to the forum Georges. I know we have several Intelliscope users around here. I'm sure someone will chime in shortly on your question of level.
