Default Hello from Newbie : )

I wanted to jump in and say hello to all. I am in a renewed state of interest in basic backyard Astronomy. I hate to admit but I am one of those guy's who put their telescope in the basement and forgot about it for some time. I guess my initial introduction into this hobby was at best, half hearted. I had good intentions but I was easily disappointed with my lack of results. I know now that I was ill prepared and easily distracted by my inexperience. I also was one of those guys who went out and bought a retail, "Walmart scope" and have paid the price the hard way. I have done my home work and I am looking to buy an Onion xt8 or xt10 in the near future. I'm just not sure yet if I should get the classic or the new intelliScope. I have taken a different approach this time around and I am focusing on learning the sky and what my expectations should be. That's why I'm here to learn and interact with fellow enthusiast like me. I also am looking to get involved with my local Astronomy Club. Well that sums it up about me.

    Thanks

    Dan

    Thanks for joining up Dan,

    Welcome to the forum.

There doesn't seem to be much middle ground with this hobby. when it grabs you it jumps up and bites

It a shame about the department store stuff, we call them "hobby killers" but if you can get a nice scope, and these days there are heaps of brands and options quite well priced, you will be amazed.

Welcome back to the hobby, ask questions, and don't be shy to contribute your personal input.

    Smile Hello all

    Hi out there to all,

My name is Sam (short for Samantha!!) i'm 35 years old and i'm situated in Waterford, South East Ireland. I have just joined this forum. I have been fascinated with Astronomy since i was a child and got my first small skywatcher telescope for Christmas, last year. I have just now bought a Nexstar 8se telescope which i have to say has me completely bewildered!! as it just doesn't seem to want to align properly at all

It is for this reason that i have found this forum in the hope that somebody out there can help me solve some of the problem i'm having with it. i'm really looking forward to chatting with fellow astronomers around the world and welcome anyone who would like to discuss the mysteries of the universe!!!

    please write soon!!
    Sam

    Hi Sam,

    Welcome to the forum.

If you look further down the board you will find a Nexstar specific forum, (Under Telescopes by manufacturer), at the top is a "sticky" with some links to info on the Nexstar series. Also you may want to post specific questions there, we have a couple of regulars who are quite experienced Nexstar users.

    Default Making a start

Hi. I'm Mike, I live in Chelmsford, Essex in England and eventually, after more years than I really care to count, I have finally bought a telescope - a Meade LX200GPS 8inch.

I am an absolute astronomy virgin but have already discovered that the moon looks absolutely FANTASTIC through this piece of kit and am having trouble wiping the stupid grin from my face.

Apart from the fact that I will now require a personal trainer to develop the musculature to lift the 'scope, I have this suspicion that I may need some assistance from other Meade users as I can't say the alignment process has gone really smoothly - yet. Perhaps that's because, breaking the habit of a lifetime, I read the user manual first and was not entirely surprised to find that the process and messaging didn't exactly fit the expected procedure. Ho hum.

I look forward to some interesting dialogue and particularly any responses that demonstrate a sense of humour - life's too short to frown.

    Best regards to all

Welcome, Mike and Sam. There's a lot of humor here--ask Vinnie and Rick--and also a lot of interest and expertise. It's a great place, Sam, for chats, and there's always something to learn.
There was a lot more humor in the days when we mercilessly bashed on the astrology wonks, but now, alas, we just delete them.
    Again, welcome.
