    Default New guy from Michigan

    Hello,

I had a college course many years ago which piqued my interest in astronomy, but between between raising kids and my career, I never had the time to pursue it. I recently took early retirement and the kids are on their own now, so I have the time. I recently purchased a nice set of binoculars after some research, and I'm looking to purchase a telescope in the next few weeks. After researching scopes I'm leaning toward the Celestron NexStar 8 SE. My wife also recently retired and is getting heavily into photography so possibly there might be some astrophotography in the future. I realize the NexStar 8 is not the best setup for this, but it seems to tick a lot of the other boxes that I'm looking for. If and when the astrophotography time comes, I may need to upgrade the mount and whatever else to make it viable.

Glad to be here and looking forward to doing a considerable amount of reading on this site.

    Jay

welcome to the forum and as for the Nexstar 8SE... that is exactly what I did and loved it. I just posted a mini review of my Nexstar that I've owned and used really regularly over the past 2 years. My one word of advice to new folks is not to underestimate the importance of a good eyepiece. They really do make a big difference if you plan to view for more than just a few minutes. I just bought an 11" scope but still love my 8SE. If I were starting over... I'd buy the 8SE again and just buy 2 good eyepieces instead of a kit full of cheap eyepieces I don't use.

Hi Jay. It's always exciting to have a new member on board here. And, that was a nice introduction from you too. Many of us on here had to put the astronomy hobby on the back burner for a few years. That Celestron NexStar 8 SE telescope is a fine instrument, and you should enjoy it for many years. Welcome to the forum Jay, and the best of wishes on your astronomy and astrophotography adventures.

I don't know where you are at in Michigan. Our club is having a star party in Vandalia, MI (south central) the weekend of May 31th - June 2nd 2019. It is open to everyone and there will be plenty of scopes there that you can look through. Most people are happy to show you the views through their scopes and eyepieces and answer what ever questions you have. It's a great place to see different equipment.
