Thank you all for the warm welcome and input. I think I’m going to go with the nexstar 6SE. Do telescopes tend to go on sale? I’m planning on talking to my local astronomy club too. There may be potential for some preowned set ups too.

There are modest sales around Christmas time and sometimes at other times as well.

If you plan to do AP with the NexStar 6SE I think you will end up being frustrated. The combination of a mount which certainly not designed for AP and a long focal length is not at all a friendly AP solution. Even if you accept significant aberrations and use a 0.5x reducer/telecompressor you will still have a relatively AP-unfriendly focal length of 750mm. It can be done but I'd not recommend it.

If you choose it for visual purposes? Nice choice - it'll do some nice work for you!

Hi Ross and welcome to the family! I bought an ETX-125 last year and I love it. Light but quite stable. Easy to transport and set up. Having said that, I also have other scopes including a Celestron C-8 which is a bit of a chore to transport and set up. Obviously The 8" SCT gathers more light than the 5" MAK But it is, for me, the perfect grab and go telescope, and the optics are very good. Like most of us here You will probably end up with "several" telescopes (Lol!) but I don't think I will ever outgrow my ETX. It's just too handy on camping trips and outings, and trips to the backyard for moon and planet gazing. I would choose the ETX for now and it's only $600 retail. Just my opinion. Bill

Bino's, tripod, and an app like SkySafari. These you will not outgrow but latter if time allows and you like astronomy they may not be your only tools for star gazing.
