I'd like to join this forum, perhaps meet some new people, discuss and share telescope making ideas, testing techniques and optical designs.

Hello! My background is 45+ years in optical design, with 36+ years of active lens design at Lockheed Martin. I retired December 2015 and have been doing part-time optical design consulting since. I love doing telescope designs, and especially helping others not only with their initial design, but guidance and design tweaking along the way as they make their scopes. Personally, I taught mirror making classes back in the 1970's while attending Texas Tech in Lubbock TX, and worked for an optical fabrication company in San Dimas, CA. I've made somewhere around 55 telescope mirrors for friends and relatives, and one 6" f/10 achromat for myself. I did four different telescope designs for McDonald Observatory, including the solar spectrum projector at the Visitor Center, the public viewing lens on the 2.7 meter Harlan Smith telescope, and the 18" Wheelchair Accessible Telescope. I've been a steady contributor on the Cloudynights ATM forum since 2007, and have been wanting to branch out and meet other folks as well.

What I'd like to do here is discuss the possibility of starting a new forum specifically on telescope optical analysis, design and tolerancing. It might start off small, but I think a lot of folks would begin to become interested in it. You already have great forums for mirror making, so this would be an additional resource covering refractors, reflectors and catadioptrics. I am the author for CassDesign, a standalone program for designing all forms of Cassegrain scopes, with the added benefit of optimizing light baffling (method published in Astronomy Technology Today in 2007). What do you think?
