If you really want to get into AP, Then you need an EQ mount.

I've been doing visual for 49 years and still haven't the desire to mess with snakes, oh I mean AP, LOL My 6 SE gets the most use and have found by trial and error over those 49 years it's about the best visual scope.
I even use it more than my 8, the 6 is a sweet spot.
It seems like a very decent scope and I'll surely add either a Schmidt-Cassegrain or APO to my arsenal in the future. I'm very interested in objects that are larger, fainter, and further away at the moment.

I see that you have the Bushnell 10x50's in your inventory. Are those a good companion for stargazing? I have a pair of those too but they're the "self-focusing" model.

I have the 6SE, I use it only for visual and teaching my daughter.
To us it is a great telescope for what we use it for.
Easy to set up and use.
We like stated do not do AP so can not vouch for the other.
The info already posted will give you an idea of what you need.

Smile Re: First telescope: NexStar 6SE or Advanced VX 6" Newtonian

So I went ahead with the AV 6 Newtonian. I'm confident this is the right choice. Many terrific reviews in the media and some insight from educated enthusiasts here reassures me that this type of scope is what I'm looking for. I won't be able to use it until next month when it arrives, but I'll post to this thread for anyone interested in following up and seeing how well the scope performs. Thanks for the advice and for the introductions, everyone!

I'm a little late to the party, and I am admittedly biased, but the 6" Newt/AVX combo can serve you well. I have been using the 6" Newt and the predecessor mount to the AVX for AP for over a year now and an generally happy with the results I am getting. If you are using a DSLR for AP, one of the first things to check is whether you can it to prime focus. The stock focuser that came with mine had to have the eyepiece holder taken off for my Canon to reach focus. Luckily the holder unscrewed easily, and revealed threads that I could screw the t-ring for my camera onto.

Welcome to the forum and good luck with your astronomy endeavors!
