    Default New Nexstar 5SE owner

My mom bought a telescope for my 3 and 5 year old on amazon that was an absolute piece of junk. It went back and the money (+a bunch more) went toward a 5SE at a pawn shop. It works great and I am really excited about putting my DSLR on it and taking some pictures. I took a whole bunch (800+) pictures during the eclipse and I decided that I needed a telescope before next time.

Give your Mom credit for trying...

    Welcome to the forum!!

The 5SE is a nice visual scope, but you will encounter some difficulties if you try to image with your DSLR through it. You can do it, but there are some things you may want to know. First, planetary and DSO imaging are completely different pursuits with completely different requirements. Your scope will be good for planetary imaging, but your DSLR will not be, the image scale will be very small. That is best done with a solar system imager like some of the newer ZWO cameras. Some of the better ones are also capable of the smaller DSOs as well, but they are not cheap. But these would fit in the focuser just like an EP and no additional equipment is needed.

Your DSLR is a good choice for DSO imaging, but your scope and mount are not. The scope can be made better at this with a focal reducer which will widen the view and speed the scope up from f/10 to f/6.3 (a .5 reducer will not work well). But I believe you will need an adapter to attach the standard .63 SCT reducer, and you need the appropriate equipment to attach the DSLR to your scope. But you are still severely limited by your mount because it is an Alt/Az mount and you will suffer from field rotation keeping your exposure time below 30 seconds. This limitation means you would benefit from a faster scope, so you will really NEED the reducer as f/10 will be too slow.

Getting the equipment to make it work for DSOs (and that being only mediocre) you may want to get a short refractor to put on your mount (it will hold a variety of small scopes) to image through instead of the 5"SCT, but you would still be limited in exposure time unless you get an equatorial mount. But you could do a lot more with DSOs with a short refractor that way.
