    Default Back after years

Well, here we go again. I've been in and out of astronomy since I was a teenager. My first experience was grinding a 6" mirror...months of going round and round a barrel. Got to the final testing stage and then one day, dropped the mirror and shattered it! That was it for a long time
More recently was involved for a while with a Megrez 110 doublet, pretty nice scope on an HEQ-5. But time and money led me to sell it all. Now, I'm retired and have the time. I recently received an inheritance and decided to treat myself to a new kit. Of course, as soon as I ordered the stuff, we immediately had 6 inches of snow, peanut butter skies and howling winds. Today, the first of my new toys arrived some quality eyepieces and a power tank for thos field trips I hope to make. The rest is still on order. I'm going with an Explore Scientific ED127CF triplet, which gets great reviews everywhere. I'll put it on a Celestron AVX GEM, which should easily carry the carbon fibre OTA plus accessories.

I want to do general observing. When there's a moon, I'm happy to look at that. Double stars have been an inspiration for many hours in the past. Other deep sky stuff, sure. Planets, why not? In short, I'm not picky, I'll look at anything

And I want to pursue some astrophotography. Last time around I did a little prime focus work with the 110 mm doublet and an un-moded Nikon D70, which mixed results. I now have a D90 and hope to get some serious deep sky from my new Apo. Lots to learn, but that's where I'm the happiest. Autoguiding will be a new subject for me, but not until I push the AVX to its limits unguided and explore the qualities of the D90.

Looking forward to some star parties. I have fond memories of Mt. Kobau, a long dusty drive up a mountain in Interior BC with jaw-dropping clear skies (Bortle 2, when there's no smoke from forest fires). And connecting with some of the local hobbyists through RASC Victoria.

Anyway, that's my story and I'm sticking to it...at least until I get too old to pack the gear out to the back yard.

Hi Diggymacd. It's always exciting to have a new member aboard with us, and returning the astronomy hobby. And, that was a very nice introduction from you too. You should have a fantastic time with the new ES ED127CF triplet reflactor and AVX mount, when they arrive. Welcome to the forum Diggymacd, and keep us posted with a first light report when the new gear arrives, and you get them out under the skies.

I, too, have returned to astronomy after I recently retired.
Thanks for the nice introduction. I cringed at the part about the smashed mirror.
