Hi and welcome to the Astronomy Forum. Sorry to hear of your disaster with your 90GT but congratulations on your new 5SE telescope. As you progress in astronomy you will find that a very high percentage of us amateurs will never use an AC power adapter with our telescopes for a variety of good reasons; one of which you know about. We use batteries. Celestron, Meade, SkyWatcher, and Orion all sell 12 cdc power supplies like this: PowerTank, 12v Power Supply [item # 18774].

Your 90GT Optical Tube Assembly aka OTA (the actual telescope) will fit on your 5SE mount but will be upside down and because the 4/5SE mount's altitude arm is not draked backwards you will not be able to point the telescope to objects high in the sky (nearly overhead). It will fit on the SLT mount with no difficulty as well as on the Skywatcher SynScan AZ goto mount and the iOptron mounts.

You can probably replace the burned out components of the mount. The suggestion to convert it to a manually operated mount is easily doable. Just remove the drive motors from the mount and it will be free moving in both altitude and azimuth.

The 5SE telescope has a built in wedge and also can controll a DSLR. The 5SE telescope itself is a 5 inch Schmidt Cassegrain Telescope and has an excellent reputation. I think that you will find it a pleasure to use. You can use the telescope for astrophotography and get some nice images of the brighter deep space objects. Here is a link to a thread that will tell you a lot about the 4/5 SE mount (the thread is about the 4SE but the 4SE and 5SE use the same mount): All You Ever Wanted to Know about the 4 SE and More

    Welcome to the forums!

I think you will love the 5SE, it is a great scope. It also complements the 90mm refractor quite well, so that is a nice combo to have!

    Cheers

What a brilliant introduction Christina, welcome to the forums.

I'm sorry to hear about your woes, believe me, you're certainly not alone in doing something silly to a piece of equipment. Congratulation on your new scope it will give you lots of enjoyment and amazing moments.

Nothing else LOOKS damaged anyway. (am I allowed to post links?? I better go back and read TOS!)

That cylinder is a capacitor. You either put too much voltage on it or for that particular capacitor, you also might have reversed the voltage. Cylinder capacitors don't like either case.

Can you take a picture of the back of both power supplies? The good one and the one that fried your scope. It will tell you the output voltage and the polarity of the connector.

Oh how about a picture of the printed circuit board?
