Default Hello from the desert SW of the US

I'm retired in the SW desert of the USA (Tucson, AZ). I've always had a keen interest in astronomy. Bought my first "real" scope in 1976 -- a Criterion 6-inch Newtonian reflector, F8, with clock drive -- which I still have. Of course, I had one of those cheap 60 mm refractors as a kid. I also have a pretty good pair of 10x binocs and a small portable wide-field scope. I'm not into photography but I do sit out several times a week for a couple hours and just . . . look.

Kitt Peak is just an hour's drive from where I live -- visited there 3 or 4 times.

Don't get hasty Hawk, there will be many more welcomes coming. This is a very friendly place.

I must confess I covet your Criterion scope. Man, that's a great piece of history there. You get to use it much?

    DesertHawk,

Welcome to the forum! Looking forward to hearing (I guess that should be reading) some nice observation reports from someone with real dark skies and 300 or more clear nights a year.

    Again, welcome.

No. Haven't used it in a over a year. The last time I used it I was able to clean the mirror pretty good but it probably needs re-silvering. (I guess aluminum, really. ) It's boxed up and mostly air-tight. It has always been a great scope -- only paid about $400 for it back in 1976.

Yup, that would be aluminizing. But, there might still be enough reflectivity on the mirror for decent results.

You know about TAAA https://tucsonastronomy.org/ ? Great club I hear. I'll sick a couple of astro-buddies, Tom and Neal, on you. I betcha they'll coax you to get with them for some observing soon. Meantime, you hafta get those boxes emptied out and put that beauty back in service.

    Clear skies!
