Default My wife bought me a telescope...

For Christmas my wife bought me a telescope. She realized how much I enjoyed astronomy when I went to visit my uncle and spent 6-8 hours playing with his scope. We spent that long because he has a *little* observatory (14 inch Celestron CGE 1400 FS, slit observatory dome, and some sweet equipment for astrophotography) and we took a ton of pictures.

When my wife saw a little Celestron scope on Amazon before Christmas as a "deal of the day" for about half off, she decided to surprise me with it. It isn't a super fancy scope, but I have really enjoyed it. She bought the Celestron AstroMaster 70 AZ. She didn't know the monster that she awoke inside of me...

I have sure enjoyed my stargazing. I live in a small town in rural Colorado with very mild light polution (a town of 8-9,000 people and there are very few street lights except for Walmart, I have to use a flashlight just to walk down the street!). Since it is a small town, most of the shops close early and nearly all the parking lot lights are shut off for most of the night. I was amazed at how well I could see the Andromeda Galaxy with the naked eye from my backyard when I moved to the area months ago! That is way different compared to Cleveland, OH, which you could barely see the big dipper...

I have spent many nights looking at the sky over the past 2 weeks. I have seen Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. I have also found the Ring Nebula, the Hurcules Cluster, Orion Nebula, Andromeda Galaxy, Whirlpool Galaxy, and Pinwheel Galaxy. I couldn't see much of these objects, but I found them and could see them!

Someday I hope to be able to afford the equipment for deep sky object astrophotography so I can actually see the details, but for now I am happy with my little telescope and visiting my Uncle for the photography aspect.

If you guys have any suggestions for objects to see visually with a modest refractory scope, let me know!

    Welcome to the forum.

    Two things...

    1. Are there any houses for sale on your block?

    2. Your wife is a definite "keeper".

Have you had a look for comet lovejoy C/2012 Q2 yet? You should be able to see that naked eye too in your skies

Hello Hineas and welcome to the forum! A very nice introduction from you! I'll second John's question of nearby by propert for sale? Wow! I thought the days of shops closing up at night and the lights being turned off were over.

Congrats on the new scope. Recommend you download Stellarium if you haven't already. It should give you lot's of fine targets to point the scope at.
