    Default Hello from SW CT

I first joined this site about a year ago to get some advice about which mount to buy. I ended up buying a Celestron AV-X to replace the stock mount which came with my Orion AstroView 120ST. It was a fantastic upgrade for me, and I am truly convinced that a GoTo mount is essential for any beginner, particularly in light polluted skies. I live in the outer suburbs of NYC, and well, it's bright here at night. This new mount has vastly improved my enjoyment of the hobby. My initial idea was to buy the better glass on a traditional mount so that I could learn the night skies better. I've always been skywatcher, and even had one of those department store scopes as a kid. I was a bad idea. I was too young, and my parents weren't interested either. Probably for the best as my other hobby, computers, led me to my career (programming), which ironically has led me back to the skies.

In 2008, my then girlfriend and I, went hiking in Utah, and spent more than a few hours looking at those magnificent dark skies; particularly around Bryce Canyon. I think that's what really got me thinking about getting back into the hobby, but this time in a serious way. Two years and a wedding later, with that same girl, and I bought 9x63 binoculars to just look. I can't say I saw much from the Upper East Side of Manhattan, or even knew what to look for, but even just looking at stars was particularly relaxing and enjoyable for me.

Two more years go by, and we have a house in CT, where the skies are dark enough for some viewing. I was really afraid of collamination, and wanted something that I could do some astrophotography with. I assumed then, that I would probably want 2 scopes, something smaller and more portable, and then a big dog later for serious viewing. That's what led me to getting the refractor first. It's a good scope, and I've enjoyed what I have seen so far. Last year's upgrade to the GoTo mount was a great idea, and I don't really regret the hours spent in that first year just trying to find stuff, insomuch as I prefer now with the GoTo spending 15-30 minutes setting up the GoTo with hours of looking after. With a baby now, I have less time, so being able to setup and see with only an hour or two to spare for my hobby is a great thing.

I'm now drooling over a big Orion 12 or 14 inch dobsonian. If I am still enjoying this hobby in a year or two, I will likely buy one. I did join two local astronomy clubs last year, and will keep my membership in one where I feel I like the group better; one prefers to meet and use the clubs big scope, whereas the other prefers to meet in a state park with everyone bringing their own toys. I like using my toy, and sharing that of other club members. In both cases, the people are great, but the style of the one club suits me more. I also started keeping a record of all my night's viewing. It's another great idea I picked up in one of the forums I've looked at.

Anyway, so that's my story. Drooling over the big dobbies is what brought me back to this site, and I think I'll keep my involvement; hence this long message. Learning astrophotography with my wife's DSLR is my next trick, as and when I can find time.

    Clear Skies!

Hi Mike. It's great to have you join us on here. And, having two or more scopes is quite common on here, as each has it's own specialty and personality. And, that was a great introduction from you too. Welcome to the forum Mike, and the best of wishes on your astronomy hobby.

    Welcome to the forums.

Your story is extremely close to mine. Started a year ago and got my goto y'day in the mail (ZEQ25). I'm a happy camper. And I'd love a big dob, eventually.

I also am a member of WAA (the one in the park for others reading) but have only been to the picnic and 1 star party. I won't be able to make it on Saturday. But there is another member that I know of that peruses these here forums.

Funny thing is that thanks to my newborn and the weather, I have missed all of this year's star parties. I went to several last year, and I am the backup website editor for WAA, but for the same reason, I haven't done much yet. I hope to though as things settle down. If only I had time to get out the last few nights as they have been so clear!
