    Default I'm the New Guy.

    Hi everyone.

I'm very new here. Found myself here while doing research on buying a telescope. I've always wanted a telescope and many years ago when I was a kid my parents got me one. It was an inexpensive refractor and it couldn't see much beyond the moon, but I used it a hell of a lot to look at the moon. I've since lost use of that telescope (last I knew it was acting as decor in my dad's house), but I've always really wanted a nice, high-quality telescope that can give me some clear views of our universe. Now that I'm in a very comfortable financial position, I'm looking to do just that.

Thanks very much. I see you live in North Georgia. I still own a house up in Gainesville (that I'm currently trying to sell), so I'm up that way a good bit. Some really nice places that way to get great views of space!

I believe I'm leaning toward getting a Celestron NexStar 6 or 8 (I plan on doing some astrophotography) but I haven't decided on anything firmly as of yet.

I've been searching up and down the forums and I'm at a bit of a loss here. Can someone point me in the direction of a sort of buying guide for telescopes?

There really isn't such a thing. Everyone's wants, needs, preferences, abilities and budget are unique.

In general terms, bigger is better. I would suggest getting the biggest scope you can afford and physically handle (including transporting it). That usually means a Dobsonian.

Hi Accipiter. It's nice to have you aboard on here. And, that was a nice introduction from you. You came to the right place to learn more about astronomy, telescopes, and make new friends. Welcome to the forum Accipiter, and best wishes on your telescope decision.

Well the reason I was looking at the NexStar was because it had the motor mount that can point the telescope at various different objects in the sky. I fully plan on learning more about where to find specific objects but that's a nice feature to have. I also want to hook my DSLR to the telescope to do some astrophotography. The 6 and the 8 seem like excellent choices for those things but I'm open to suggestions.

I have a reasonable budget, not looking to spend more than $1k.
