Hi Accipiter, It sounds like you might be better to start off just viewing the celestial objects. You can always get into Astrophotography a bit down the line.
As for a telescope, and about $1000 to spend, your best bet is to get a dobsonian (Newtonian-Reflector) type telescope. Here's a good way to go: Orion SkyQuest XT10i IntelliScope Dobsonian Telescope | Orion Telescopes
It has a computer handset that tells you where to push and pull your telescope to find objects. It does not have a clock drive, but this is the next best thing. It also has 10 inches of aperture, which is very important when trying to observe fainter objects. It also is fairly portable. It should fit into most cars, SUV's or trucks. And it leaves you with enough money to purchase a laser collimator, a Telrad. moon filter, and a few other things, keeping you within your budget. This probably give you the best bang for those bucks that you wish to spend.
My suggestion is that you spend more time, asking questions and researching. There are plenty of people here who can give you plenty of good advice, but you, in the end, make the decision of how you are going to spend your money.
I really do think that the suggestion of getting together with a club at a star party is the best thing to help you. You will get a lot of chances to look through various types and sizes of telescopes, and most of all, ask questions. Of course, joining an organization is a great thing to do. You meet new people, and make new friends with similar interests.
Best to you on your quest for that new telescope. We all look forward to that time when you announce your decision, and after that, give us that "First Light" report. Caley
