    Default Complete Newbie

Hi, I am a complete newbie and like many here I got a scope for Christmas. I got a Bresser Skylux. I know its not the best scope in the world, but I am just starting to take an interest in astronomy and so far I am pleased with it. I'm literally brand new to this so will have a trawl through the site and see what advice I can get. The main thing I am trying to do first, is get the finder scope aligned. Should I be doing this first? Or is there something more important to be doing? I have already had a little go with it and managed to catch a good look at the International Space Station. I can see me spending a few cold nights on my own in the garden! I also have tickets for the BBC stargazing live event in Portsmouth, so will be picking peoples brains there too, no doubt.

Wewlcome to the forum SCVRS!. Yes,aligning the finderscope first is a good start. I recommend doing this during the daylight. It will make navigating the night sky much easier.

Hi and welcome to the forum, I think you have to download "Stellarium", it's free and very helpful, after you download it, you have to input your location, and Local time.

Hello SCVRS. It's very nice to have you aboard with us. Lining up your finderscope is fundamentally important. You can use a distant object, such as a light or radio tower in the daytime, to align the finder scope to what you see centered in a low power eyepiece. This should help make finding the sky objects much easier for you. And, congratulations on seeing a ISS flyby. Attending that BBC stargazing event, should also be of great help to you. Welcome to the forum, and best wishes on your astronomy hobby.

    Welcome to the forum.

Aligning the finder is easiest in the daytime, with a distant land-based target.
