Question Hi My name is rick and will be asking a great deal of questions because this is my fi

first day in this exciting hobby. I currently have a forty year old tasco telescope. It is 4/12 inches in Diameter. It is time for my questions. People are telling me not to use the barlow lense why.also is there a place in toronto to buy add ons to my scope. There is one that i know of but i would have to mortgage my house for his accessories. Looking for some feed back.

By the way, what is a tag?

    Welcome to the forum.

I don't know why people are telling you not to use the barlow. You'll have to ask them. It might overpower the scope with some eyepieces, but it should be fine with others.

Hello Rick. It's good to have you with us on here. I don't know why you have found such negativity to the Barlow lense, unless this would put you above the magnification limit of your telescope. But, you have come to the right place to learn more about these things, and to ask several other questions. Welcome to the forum, and best wishes on your astronomy hobby.

Welcome to the forum and to astronomy Rick. It wont hurt to try out the barlow with whichever eyepieces you have. I personally use one all of the time but like others stated, it may be too powerful depending. I would recommend testing it out on the moon and planets like Jupiter, and Saturn for starters. There are some objects that lower magnification will be necessary to get better, wider views where a barlow wont be necessary. Have fun and enjoy the views ...and the forum.
