Welcome to the forum Rick! Most of the time I like to use my 2x Barlow with my eyepieces rather than use my zoom eyepiece! Clear skies!

Hi Rick. The Barlow shouldn't cause any problems unless you are using it with eyepieces that already high-power. This may cause the magnification to exceed the practical limit for the scope. Cheers and Welcome to the Forum!

There seems to be a tendency at first when starting out to try to set up one's scope for higher and higher magnifications. And as you mellow in Astronomy a little, there is more comfort in wider angle viewing. Perhaps that will answer this question.

    Welcome to the forum!
I rarely use a Barlow as I try to keep down the amount of extra glass I'm looking through but a Barlow does have many advantages.
It can be used to basically increase the number of eyepieces one has as for example a 2x Barlow will make a 25mm EP a 12.5mm and so on.
They are great for deep sky objects & planets to bring them in closer if one's telescope allows that much magnification.
