    Default Back after 30 years!

    Greetings everyone,

I had a cheap telescope as a kid and really enjoyed looking at Saturn's rings, moon, etc... Life sped by and last weekend I took a chance and purchased a dusty Meade DS2114ats telescope at a garage sale. First use was somewhat disappointing with the stripped focuser gears & a blurry Saturn I couldn't bring into sharpness - but the moon looked incredible, at least better than I'd ever seen it, so that was a good sign. After obtaining the manual, I was able to learn about this collimation thing and how my scope was in bad need of it. After that and fixing the stripped focuser gears, Hello Saturn!! I could see it better than I ever had as a kid. Felt like seeing an old friend again.

Hello Bigbjfan. Wonderful to have you with us on here. Congratulations on the new (to you) DS2114 telescope. I am glad that you were able to get it tuned up, and got to see Saturn. Welcome to the forum, and best wishes on being back into the astronomy hobby.

Welcome to the forum! Glad you got yourself squared away. You should be able to check out some DSO's with that 114mm aperture. Download Stellarium and try finding some of the brighter Messiers around magnitude 5.

    Hi Big,

Welcome to the forum. I was also away from the hobby for a long time then started back up strong early last year. This forum is the best. There's a great deal of experience and knowledge here. This forum has saved me time and money, a lot of both.

With that being said, I have a Meade DS2102 (same mount, slightly smaller scope) and my focuser sucked too. Last year I found this site and the first thing I did was replace the focuser.

    Hope this helps,
