    Default Hello from Brisbane

    Hello everyone.

I'm starting to slowly explore this forum and thought I better post a "hello" message!

My main interests are in imaging area more than visual, although I'm researching what science research might be possible from within my suburban backyard. I do have access to some dark(er) sites, but they can be several hours away from home so not on a work night.

I've purchased a number of books that I'm slowly reading through (the titles are below if anyone is interested). Besides improving or refreshing my knowledge in various aspects, I'll be using these books to help in the process of working out what gear I need to get. I currently have no astro gear, so I'll be starting from scratch.

I'm quite comfortable with computers, so while I expect to initially setup a system based on using Windows, I am hoping to convert to using Linux for as much as practical once I'm more familiar with what I'm doing.

Finally, and quite important, the Minister of Finance (aka wife) has approved a significant budget for this operation.

    The books:

    • Scientific Astrophotography: How Amateurs Can Generate and Use Professional Imaging Data (Patrick Moore's Practical Astronomy Series)
    • Backyard Astronomer's Guide
    • The Sky is Your Laboratory: Advanced Astronomy Projects for Amateurs (Springer Praxis Books / Popular Astronomy)
    • Astronomical Spectroscopy for Amateurs (Patrick Moore's Practical Astronomy Series)

Welcome, we're glad you're here. I'm sure you'll find lots of helpful advice and interesting reading on the forums. We haven't found a solution to overspending on astronomy equipment. Consider yourself forewarned.

There are a few things that intrigue me, but it wasn't until I read about these guys: Home Page - BOSS-Backyard Observatory Supernova Search that I realised that doing viable research with my own gear from my own backyard was really feasible. I had it in my head you basically needed dark sites, big observatories, etc. to get anything done. So time to grab some books and read up on what is possible!
