On the flipside I hear that those who own this scope never part with them so this may be a rare chance to own a good solid setup that could last me a lifetime.

Any comments or advice? I have to make a quick decision here or move on & away from this one....

Hi Phil, we're glad you're here.

I don't own the TAL, but my RV-6 (154mm on a steel pier GEM) is in the same weight class, and about as easy to set up. I have it permanently set up now, but moved it in and out for years. It is a bit cumbersome, and I've dinged more than one doorway moving it in one piece. It's better to move the OTA and mount separately, this makes it much more manageable. The mount is heavy, but a reasonably fit person can manage it easily. I wouldn't want to have to carry it too far, though, or up and down flights of stairs.

That TAL has several advantages over the Explorer that you should seriously consider:
#1 that motor drive will keep things in the eyepiece after you've found them
#2 a quality pier mount (because there is nothing worse that viewing on a wobbly mount)
#3 consistently great TAL optics (the reputation means you'll always be able to sell it, should you decide it's not for you)
#4 aperture is also something you should consider, as 150mm vs. 130mm will give you an advantage in viewing

If it were me and I could afford it, I'd consider that an awesome telescope to own. I'm still using my RV-6!

Let us know how it works out for you!

Hi Phil, it is easily manageable, but storage of it was an issues I had to negotiate. I would recommend it though as I don't think it is too much bigger than the 130.

Okay here's what I ascertained from the seller - yes it's a heavyweight but so much more robust compared to similar Chinese-built items as seems to be the norm today.

I'm advised it is easy to set up despite the weight - by the use of thumbscrews rather than tools so like you said Tillybobs should become second-nature in time.

I've no second-hand prices for guidance - none on eBay or Amazon & after a google search but I've found an awful lot of good feedback on this scope - to the extent that even hardened astronomers who have "moved on" to bigger equipment rarely part with their beloved TAL....

So all things considered I've offered the seller £150. Will let you know how it pans out...

Thanks Charlie (Alpha Tauri). I've spent many weeks now chewing over this "big step" & have now made a bid on a secondhand scope so fingers crossed..

Aaron (mrlovt) thanks for your advice. I'm sorry I'm still getting to grips with this forum stuff & have been struggling to find posts on this thread because of the adverts really annoying me. Have discovered that 5 posts from me should improve that...

Keep finding posts from others now. I had to google RV-6 to see where you are coming from - that's a classic telescope from the images I've found. And you'll see from the previous post I've made an offer on the TAL after a lot of thought - as you say I'm sure it's the right one to start with given that new (smaller 130mm types) can cost considerably more..

Will let you know if I get it
