There are many choices in cases/padded soft case etc. I may build something to transport my AD 12. Clear skies, Bob
I had no idea that the observatory was here when I moved here, happened on it by chance...got hooked into this new hobby when I went to a talk there and attended a star party. Now, to find a case..I keep looking online, there has to be a cheap (but good) one somewhere. It's cumbersome to carry my scope without one, yours must be much bigger than mine, so you know that feeling. I'm considering getting some astronomy binoculars for easier transporting to meetings at Observatory Park and keeping this scope at home to use in my (very dark) back yard.

Carolyn, You could go with a soft sided case with plenty of padding or maybe a hard plastic chest that you could cut the foam insert to fit your scope. There are several companies that make various size containers that would do the job. I have seen cases that hold the ot in one side and the tripod in the other. Shop the options and see what will work out the best for you. How much travelling will you be doing? If you will be doing the handling and hauling a lighter case will do. If you plan on commercial transportation then a more substantial case is called for to protect your scope from the baggage mishandlers. There is always a solution to the problem. Good luck, Bob

Thanks, Bob..I only plan to go to astronomy meetings/star parties and stargazing at the observatory (sticking close to home). I'm thinking of getting the binoculars for more portable traveling (if I go out west to visit friends, taking to the meetings on days I don't feel like lugging the telescope there). It would be great to get a hard case, probably used because new ones seem to be pricey. I know soft sided ones are expensive but harder case would be more protective.
I don't know about you, but it sure would be great if these NE Ohio clouds would just go away, wow..come on, clear skies, lol.

Carolyn, Now wait just one minute, it's Ohio. It's supposed to be cloudy, rainy, cold, miserable,... Sooner or later it HAS TO clear up. What size case will you need for your scope? I've seen military surplus cases of all sizes. Coleman's Surplus has had several different size cases. Hopefully clear skies, Bob

Bob, It's just funny because no sooner do I buy my scope then it clouds up and stays that way, Yes, it will clear eventually (next year? I love Ohio, the weather is crazy but it's home ..when I lived in Florida for awhile, it was all the same (blistering hot), why I came back here. Needed these four seasons!

My scope is 18" by 5.5" (not including the eyepiece and spotting scope on top, those add on a few more inches). I'll look into Coleman's, thanks for the tip. I saw a few hard cases on Ebay and will price compare to find the best one.

Carolyn, So 24"x 12"x 12" ?? You might do better with foam you have to cut for padding. The pre cut foam sometimes breaks away at the wrong place and leaves a void where you need cushioning for your scope. Are you figuring on keeping the tripod in the case or separate? Just a thought. You might find a shipping case( reinforced plastic ) that occasionally come up for sale. Please forgive all the questions. I'd rather keep others from making the mistakes I've made. Take care, Bob

No problem, Bob..I appreciate your questions! I know so little about this and am grateful. I'm thinking of keeping the tripod separate, it's big and I'm not worried about that. I have a tripod soft case somewhere in my house, just haven't found it yet..lol..could probably use that for this tripod. It's the scope itself that is my concern, since it has fragile mirrors and lenses. I'll have to buy foam someplace, since Rokinon doesn't seem to sell cases to go with their scopes (that would've been ideal). I was thinking to wrap the scope in plastic (the way it was when I got it new) then in foam or cushioning before putting in a case.

    Hi Carolyn,

I am also new at this and have met some great folks here already! Congrats on the scope and I hope the bug bites you as hard as it has me!

    Clear skies!

Carolyn, I think it's an unwritten rule, new scope= period of rotten weather. The solution is to get somebody very far away to buy a new scope and move the curse somewhere else. Most surplus cases have foam inserts. There are vendors that sell foam blocks to fit the case and you carve it to fit. Many different ways to. Don't forget about something to store eyepieces in(one more worry). Take care, Bob

KingClinton..yes, the bug has bitten..this is a fascinating hobby..so much to know but I'm up for the challenge!

Bob, I'll check out the foam and will see about a lens case..saw some on Ebay. Yes, someone far away from me needs to buy a scope..get this weather out of here, lol
