Welcome to the forum and thanks for joining.
Gus asked me to introduce myself, So hello.
I am very new to all of this but have always had an interest in what is beyond our planet, but has been confined to what I can watch on TV and the odd book or just looking up. Recently I was asked if I would like to have a look through a friend of a friends telescope. I was amazed, looking at a planet (in this case Jupiter) with your own eyes is a very different experience to seeing it on TV.
I knew I couldn't afford anything like what he had (Goto 6” celestron) so looking on the internet to see what I could get I came across ATMs. People grinding mirrors, making tubes out of sewage pipe and what ever was around the house to fill in the gaps, wiring the lot to a PC and taking superb pictures. It seems you have to go pretty big to make the effort worth while. So I have decided to go half way. I have brought a tube off ebay (possibly the worst place to buy I have been told but it was cheap, I have yet to pick it up so time will tell) and plan to build the mount.
This is what brought me to your forum, Dangerdogs fork mount a stunning piece of work, plus others that I have found looking round. Thanks for all the information you have all posted.
I am sure that I will be asking lots of questions. I have noted that car axles have been used for the bearings and small motors to turn everything (my instincts tell me to do the opposite). So any thoughts on why so big with the bearings would be appreciated.
Bye for now
