Welcome to the forum Louis!
Your plan sounds good to me. I also would lean towards the RC scope.
Hi everyone,
My name is Louis and I'm down in Sussex UK. I'm currently looking to get started with astrophotography.
I already have a Pentax K5 (low noise, high ISO) at the moment (unmodified for IR) - I'd plan to use that with prime focus and maybe switch to a CCD / web cam in the future.
After some investigation I'm considering the following setup and would appreciate any advice at all.
Mount: SkyWatcher HEQ5 Pro SynScan Goto equatorial (setup needs to be portable so I think this is as big as I can go).
Scope: Altair Astro GSO 8" deluxe carbon fibre Ritchey Chretien astrograph
(or maybe the Celestron 9.25 XLT SCT maybe, but I mostly want to image with visual observation just for fun). The 8" GSO is my first choice as it stands.
It's of course a bit of an initial outlay, but I'd like to start properly if at all and I'm hoping it will be a long term hobby.
Any thoughts greatly appreciated. Also any ideas on dark sites around the Sussex area would be useful too
Louis

Hi,
Thanks for all the replies. Sounds like this setup gets the thumbs up. Anyone have any experience or pictures taken with the Altair Astro GSO 8" ?
I'm a bit worried about light pollution where I am now, taking a long exposure with a wide angle lens picks up quite a bit of orange. Maybe my settings are wrong, maybe the telescope will block out stray light well with such a narrow field of view. I imagine I'll need to travel to some better local sight to get any really decent pictures. I envy anyone who lives in a real dark skies area.
Anyone living in or on the edge of a city, how do you cope, are you able to take any good pictures at all?
thanks, Louis
