Default New amateur astronomer from Ottawa On.

    Hi everyone!
I am a long time lover of astronomy, but just recently got my first telescope.
Celestron Powerseeker 70EQ Refractor telescope, perhaps if anyone has this telescope, they could show me some tricks? :P
Thanks guys, I look forward to becoming more involved in the Astronomy "world".
    Cheers,

    Shamus M.

    Welcome!

I've just recently gotten into astronomy myself, and I have a similar scope, so hopefully I can share a little of what I have learned in the past couple weeks.

First off, magnification isnt everything. Telescopes are all about collecting light, and the bigger the aperture, the more light it can collect. While it would seem that the highest magnification would result in the biggest, brightest picture, this is not true. You will use your 20mm eyepiece a lot more than the 4mm (magnification = focal length of scope / focal length of eye piece)
    So your scope...
    700mm / 20mm = 35x (or 105x with the 3x barlow)
700mm / 4mm = 175x (or 525x with the 3x barlow... way too much magnification and this setting probably will not be of any use)

The best upgrade you could make would probably be another eyepiece. I dont have a ton of experience, so I wont go recommending anything, but I will tell you that I recently purchased a zoom lense and really enjoy it. Turned my little starter scope into a new telescope... or seemingly.

    good luck!

Welcome to the forum-- read the posts in the Beginner's Topic about EQ mounts and polar alignment. Magnification is the least important property of a telescope by the way.
