Hi John, welcome, bienvenu, wilcommen, g'day, air hair lair (that's English for oh hello in snob language. Say it quickly)
What do you think you'd like to look at mostly?
Have you spent any time looking through someone else's scope so you know what to expect?
What sort of loot were you thinking of disbursing to achieve your aim?

By the by, I think it is quite usual for someone interested in joining an astronomy website to have an interest in Astronomy - it'd be kinda counterproductive to be interested in marine biology for instance.

    Hi, John. Welcome.

Was there a particular model of Meade you were interested in? I ask because the major brands are all made in the same factory, and there is not much to distinguish one brand from another. Often price is the deciding factor.

What got me interested in astronomy again is a friend of a friend is selling his Meade LX200R 12" for $2300. It is in good shape as far as I can tell from looking at it. (its in a consignment shop) I am also into photography and thought I would combine the two. Is this a good price for this model used scope and what does the "R" designation mean?

That would be a very VERY nice scope. The R stands for Ritchey-Chretien, the optical design of the scope. They are expensive, though. I don't know about prices in the used market, but $2300 doesn't sound unreasonable considering that, new, they are $4500.
