Hi everyone!! I joined this forum to learn more about how to buy a telescope as well as get recommendations. I'm 16 and I would really like to start looking at the night sky. Right now, my parents are planning to buy a telescope, but we don't know what to get. I've already learned the different types of telescopes and the necessity for a big aperture to see better views of deep space. My parents said that their budget is $1000. We're looking for a computerized mount, I have one question regarding that, can you manually move around the scope on GoTo mounts? I was thinking of an SCT and I already looked at Celestron's wide range of them. The C6-SGT and the NexStar 6SE looked good but I was wondering what one can see with these. I'm also interested in some astrophotography and I don't know whether I can put a canon 40d on one of these. Also, are there any other telescopes that fit these prerequisites and perhaps with a little bigger aperture?? I haven't seen any bigger aperture telescopes that have a computerized mount and costs less than $1000. In addition to the telescope, what accessories will be needed? I'm also a little confused by the clear dark sky charts, can someone explain it to me and tell me whether my area has decent seeing? I live about 4.5 miles west of Salisbury, MD.

The local astronomy shop? I don't think there is one in Salisbury, this place is pretty primitive.

Salisbury doesn't have one ..LOL ..To have one in your state is a privilege ..MD has two .. Company Seven | Astro-Optics Division Telescope Shop Index Page and Hands On Optics :: Telescopes, Accessories, CCD and Digital Cameras ..The later of the two are more friendly and will talk to beginners about scopes ..I know this from personal experience ...

Welcome to the forum Ychen. If you want a computerized goto telescope probably the celestron 6se is a good choice. Thats a fine telescope. You can see the moon / planets as well as a lot of dso's. The 8se is about 1199 bucks, and I think celestron has a 100 dollar rebate on them right now. As far as astrophotography, you can do some snap shots of the Moon and Jupiter with that set up. To do anything else much you will need to get a wedge so you can polar align the telescope, or put it on an eq mount.

If you start out with the Celestron 6 or 8 SE you will have everything you need to get started and see a LOT of stuff. Dont worry about getting upgrades for a while. Dont spend your money on accessories until you realize you need to upgrade. Then you can get what you need instead of just buying something. Blue/green skies are great. That means you don't have a lot of light pollution and should have some pretty dark skies where you are.

Anyway welcome to the forum and keep us posted.

    Clear Skies to ya

Celestron C9.25. Atlas EQG mount. Canon 500D unmodded, Celestron ST80 guide scope, SSAG, Meade 6.3 FR, Thousand Oaks dew control with Dewnot straps. Zhumell 8/24mm Zoom, 2"Gso Superview 42mm, Meade 2"QX wide angle 30MM, Meade 1.25 EP and filter set. Tasco 10x50 Zhumell 20x80 bino and a few other odds and ends.
Now where did I put that clear sky button!
