    Cool ETX80 with #494 Handbox. Need a #506 lead

    Hello again guys.
Anyone (UK based) still know of, or have a source for the #506 lead (Meade ETX80 AT-to RS232) to connect to pc?
My #494 sounds so obsolete now- it blows, but the whole package is in fact mint condition throughout,
(Bought new, 11 years ago, xmas present, then sadly packed away due to son's loss of interest)with the exception of my improved attaching of the existing camera port spigot ! (On another post)
But she's part of the family, I like it a lot. I'm using the scope now, fully functional, but I would at the very least, like to update the on board software.(Satellites / comets etc)
Apparently mine, utilising the older # 494 controller (Non- numeric keypad version) will not work with any of the other more popular/easily obtained leads.
No Idea what the deal is here folks. it's a kind of BT plug, to an RS232 ! Are they "Chipped " or something?
Can't believe it's this complex - for a length of wire, but obviously there is something mysterious going on inside !
(If and when I do manage to appropriate one, I will still have to adapt to usb too, but that's the easily overcome bit !)
anyone else struggled/ struggling with this ?
Anyone got one they no longer need ?
    Ideas ?
Thanks in advance - as usual.
    Gaz.

I would E-mail Meade. I have heard that they have updates or you could get a 497 hand box? Bill

    Thanks Bill.
Was made "Repugnant" just before Xmas, so money's a bit too tight for a handset at the mo.(Had considered that tho - then saw the prices !) I'm just in conversation with Rother-Valley Optics. Fingers crossed - they - if anyone - should know. been in. they are really helpful guys, fingers crossed.

Just got a reply from Rother ! yes, they do have the #506, and the USB adapter lead to suit windows 10 (They use these themselves, so they should be fine compatibility-wise).
The #506 comes bundled with the autostar disc (Mine's already installed and running on the laptop, so didn't really need the disc. (Read as - money saving excercise !)
So.... alltogether, delivered = just shy of £64. So yes, still available, but way out of my reach till I get some income again ! (Lot of spondulics for a couple of wires eh !) I thought (Hoped) with them now being obsolete (Quote - Meade) they might have been cheaper, or perhaps a "spares for sale" on a big popular selling site". Nope. rocking horse poo - it seems. Now where's that piggy bank...............

    Gday Gazbo
    Just for info,
The 494 handset doesnt use a dedicated / standard rs232 comms chip ( like the later 497s ) to communicate with a PC, it simply uses the proprietary bitbanged comms via the Aux bus to communicate to everything, including the external PC.
ie The "506" cable is actually just another "device" on the Aux bus, and as such has a custom coded PIC converter built into it, that can communuicate on the Aux bus when asked. As such, the 494 talks to the PIC in the cable using Meades proprietary clock/data protocol and the PIC converts it to rs232 to talk to the PC.

Try Ebay. They have both the single and double cable sets. $17 on up.
