    Default Help! Eyepiece fell apart!

So, went to do take out my EPs and heard a rattle when I got my 6.4mm out (from an EXT80).

Two problems: I have no idea how this goes back together, and I don't know if it's worth it if the lenses are too scratched from rattling around in the ep case (little plastic film canister thing they come from the factory in).

Oh no! I can feel that pit in the stomach when you first hear the rattle!

On a plus note, those innards look pretty neat to me.

    Hello jbrandt,

putting the lenses back should not be much of a problem.

The both lenses are cemented achromats. Open the link astronomical optics, part 5: eyepiece designs , and go to the pic showing Plössl. Print the pic of the Plössl assy out, to use it for reference in which order the lenses will be inserted. Important is that the both lenses face each other with the concave surfaces.
The small black ring might be the spacer bewteen the both lenses. look if there are any threads to screw everything fixed together.
The smaller lens is the eye lens (towards your eye), the larger lens is the field lens towards the telescope.

Clean softly the lens surfaces with an optics cloth, as used for the photo lenses.

Should you fail, then return the EP, or keep it as a toy.

    Happy doing,

    JG

    Helo j.brandt

    glad, this has worked.

I always kindly ask our AF members when they are successful with some repair works, to document it eventually with some illustrating pics, and to post it.
    It really helps.

    Best,
