    Default arrived today

    Hi Guys
my 2nd hand etx90 arrived today, even though it was sold as broken everything seems ok and the only thing i can find wrong is the flip mirror doesnt flip using the knobs but it moves if you flip it manually and there are a couple of hairline cracks on the plastic at the back of the scope these seem very superficial like stress cracks from mounting a camera to the back?. Can anyone tell me if i can fix the flip mirror?
    Couple of queries
Also it only came with a 26mm ep what would you suggest as additions
Also can the pointer scope be focused as it seems blurry? or is this me being a noob and trying to focus on objects too close?
I'll post up some pics when i get home as the mount is an interesting one. Not meade but heavy duty and has a star emblem on it so interested to see what it is.
    thanks in advance

hopefully should have added images of my new toy. Not sure about the tripod and mount may need to look for something a little lighter for travelling?

The mount is Meade. The mount is the fork arms that the actual telescope tube is attached to. The tripod looks like a standard 883 Meade. Now the part with a star on it is made by Telescope House. It is what is known as a wedge.

A wedge is used with fork mounted telescopes such as yours to put it in the "polar mode". This makes it so that the mount only has to track in one direction when aligned properly. It is also pretty necessary for long exposure photography to eliminate field rotation. By the way, you can remove that wedge and operate that telescope in the alt/az mode until you get used to it. I would not recommend using a wedge on that telescope at all actually. It might be cool later on if you decide to try your hand at some astrophotography, but you might be a ways away from going down that dark path.

Most finder scopes have a focus ring either on the eyepiece end, or on the objective end. Some of them you actually adjust the focus by moving the objective in or out by turning it. If this is the case it should have a lock ring also. This would keep it from getting out of focus.

The ETX 90 is a pretty decent scope. Should give you some good views of planets and brighter dsos.

As far as fixing the flip mirror, check out Weasners Mighty ETX Site. There probably isn't a question that can be asked about an ETX telescope that hasn't been answered there.

As far as an eyepiece for that telescope, I would recommend taking a look at a Celestron 8/24mm zoom eyepiece for now. It will effectively give you a whole set of eyepieces.

    Hope that helps some.

    That is a 90mm Mak-Cass f/13.8.
I had a 100mm Mak-Cass (f/12) with a GOTO mount and it turned out to be a pretty nice scope.
As far as eyepieces, I bought a Celestron kit that had 5 Plossl EPs, I'm guessing on focal lengths, but like 4, 6, 9, 15 and 32. I really didn't get much out of the 4, 6 or 9 in my old scope, to high of magnification for the primary mirror size. I'd stay with the lower power ones like a 15mm and a 32mm. Add a 2x barlow and you'll have a lot of it covered.

You will be disappointed with the finder scope as it is very hard to look through when the scope is pointed UP -------- but this can be easily corrected by mounting a Rigel Quickfinder --- finder scope. If I remember correctly you TURN the front element on the focuser to focus it.

thanks guys i've ordered a barlow and i'm looking out for a couple of eye pieces and a rigel finder. Im not feeling the love for the big meade tripod that came with it though, its big and clumpy feeling. Can anyone suggest an alternative, perhaps a bit lighter as it weighs a lot! Just in the process of sorting out a 12v adapter so i can run it from th emotorhome or a motorcycle battery when we go camping

had a bit of luck and have managed to get a few ep's from uk astronomy buy and sell and also an autostar for a very reasonable price so just waiting for a clear night! Also had a good trawl through weasners site but can't find any help with the flip mirror knob rotating. Will have a bash at taking the end off at the weekend and have a lokk inside see if its an easy fix!!!!

As for the flip mirror, I was told that replacement parts are hard to find. If you can turn it manually, leave it as is, unless you can find spare parts to fix it. If you do end up replacing it, make sure it is positioned correctly. I ran into the same issue with my 105 and I had Dr. Clay repair mine with adhesive.

managed to repair the flip mirror using a small stainless washer araldited to the broken plastic part and a thin piece of steel to form the flat edge. It now works perfectly
