I remember on mine I had the same problem, I could not get the thing to power up and display. I found somewhere where you hold two buttons down while powering it up, and it does a ram clear and reloads the controller... I do not remember which two buttons I used, but it cleared the scrambled memory settings and allowed me to upgrade the firmware... I am sure Joe knows the process I am referring to...

ENTER and SCROLL DOWN buttons at the same time while turning on the power-- places it in SAFE Load-- and then you reload the firmware. You can try that but it actually does not reset the controller.

What the heck-- try it. This is actually used for a FAILED firmware update to allow you to try again.

    Hi Joe,

Thanks for the very useful tutorial of the 497 setup. I have a question also that perhaps you'll know the answer to. Wasn't there an option before to set the scrolling speed on the display? I can't find that option anywhere on my 497 and it scrolls too fast to read it, blurring the letters together.

    Best regards,
    Bob

    Bob,

with my LX80, I can slowdown and speedup the scrolling by using the scroll up/down arrows. The HC is a 497EP, so I don't know if it's different than the one you have.

I think I found a link that confirms this. LINK See page 2 of the PDF and look at scroll up key and scroll down key...

    Thanks Tom,

I was looking in the setup menus for the handset, I remember seeing an option before to set the scroll rate but it may have been on my 494 handsets. My memory isn't as good as it once was!

Still working on setup. Thanks for the post. q. I have read of a "quick scroll" feature but after downloading the current #497 software, I tried to hold down the down arrow key (on star names) and it did not scroll.

The scroll feature simply speeds up or slows down how fast the letters go across the screen--- the down and up arrows select stars, ngc, and ic objects etc--- if you hold down the up or down arrows on the bottom of the hand controller it will run through the list.
