    Earth's plates move due to the convection currents in the mantle. The rising and falling of the magma in the mantle, similar to a beaker of boiling water, causes convection currents, which drag the plates apart.

    If convection were the only force that moves the continents than the movement should be random which is not the case. All continents move northwards, Africa and Eurasia move also eastwards a.s.o. Other more structured forces must direct these movements.
