If intelligient life forms from another planet made contact with earth...?

and they believed in one of the religions already established on earth, would you convert?

Lets say for example they are Buddhist, They even mention Buddha himself.

When asked how they learned of Buddhism they calim Buddha reincarnated on their home planet and spread the word. They have all he books, teachings, ect that earthly Buddhists have.
Here's the kicker though, they can PROVE that they have not had the technology to travel to earth before 300 years ago. they only became capable of picking up televison signals, radio signals, Ect. 1000 years ago.

They can prove this.

But the thing is, they can also prove their bhudism started, and all the holy scripts wrote, 2000 years ago, before they had anyway of contacting earthlings.

Atheists, would you convert?

yeah. but i dont believe religion is a universal thing. "God" Is the god of humans and humans only, he is the god of all humans and earth, not the god of all martians and mars.

But if that really happened i would probably convert

Well not so sure. At first thought I would think yes, I would...but...theres a lot of astronomers out there that believe somewhere out there theres an exact replica of Earth, so whos to say there isn't another earth with Christianity, Buddhism, etc; and the ones that come into contact with us just happen to be a part of that one religion

What possible form would this proof you speak of take? We can't even proof our own history for more than a few years. History is written by the winners. Try as I might I cannot think of any way un-disputable proof could be provided. If however i am wrong and there is a way they could prove it beyond doubt, I would of course embrace Buddhism. I'm atheist and the one thing I believe in is evidence so if it was provided what more could I want. There is no way I would just take their word for it though.
Yet another problem that i just thought of would be the language barrier. They obviously wouldn't speak English so there word for Buddha would be different. So we would be left trying to make interpretations about weather the aliens religion is really Buddhism or just a similar religion that arose independently. Again making the proving very, very, difficult.

Ok.. well if they are so advanced as to travel light years through the universe... I don't think they would be stupid enough to get involved with religion .. I think their civilizations would be long past that stage of evolution!

thats an interesting thought... it would certainly help any established religion.

I think though... it would make more sense that they are lying and they did come earlier and introduced the dogma for their own purposes. This would fall into line with the general atheist belief that religion was established for political and social control purposes whether by man or alien.

As with the thing about Buddhism, it doesn't really have a God at it's center. Some forms of Buddhism have incorporated local Gods like Shinto-Buddhism in Japan but Buddhism itself is pretty devoid of the trapping of religion -so many Atheists are practicing Buddhists.
