    Default Help with a XT10

My brother in law owns an XT10 and his won't hold altitude except near zenith and to around 45 degrees. Go below 45 degrees and stop at a star and it drops about 3 to 5 degrees.

He's put on some ceramic magnets covered in tape so they don't scratch the tube and that helped a little, so now it only happens once in a while. He has one spring that seems loose to me. Any quick fixes anyone knows? He does have a Telrad and a 9x50 finder on it but so does mine and mine is fine as is the XT8 I own.

I personally have no experience with the XT10 but it does sound like something is wrong with the springs.

Hi AJ ...I would say that one spring is a little loose ...I dont think there is a way to tighten a spring other than a little more stretch on it or replacement ...I would try a couple of more magnets as weights .... I would try the weights first , before i replaced springs ....

I wonder if you could just move the little bolt/catch thing on the sides of the base down a little to pull the spring tight again.

Yes, in looking at the springs one is more stretched out. So do I go to Lowe's or Home Depot and match the springs, or do I try this mod that I found for a Zhumall and modify it for the XT10?

I would try the mod if all else fails...must be an inferior design because Zhumell doesn't use springs any more.

It's not the springs. I've added the counter weight via the ceramic magnets wrapped in black electrial tape. I took my RA 9x50 finder off and that really helped. I like having it at times, but I can star hop using my 21mm Stratus. Funny though how my XT8 doesn't do this with a 9x50 finder and a telrad. Sigh, I'll keep looking trying to figure this out.

How about a bit more friction somehow? I know my dob stays put regardless of weather I have in the 9mm or the heavy combo of 30mm and Barlow yet it still moves easily and smoothly....no adjustment ever needed.
