It takes a bit longer to really learn your sky but you have so much more fun and getting your first DSO in the EP if fantastic! Planets are a treat and all withtin reach of a 8"!
So no matter what you get enjoy and keep us posted!

I have never owned a telescope but looking to buy one, for the last 2 or so weeks I have been eager to get an 8" dob but have just read a comment saying that they aren't good for astrophotography....I'm now back to square one, searching for the right telescope that fits my needs. I guess what I am trying to say is, that there are hundereds of options when it comes to telescopes but finding the right one can be a pain so go for the most common one which seems to be the 8" dob. Couldn't believe how big they were when I seen a video of someone using one.

I looked at the eight inch but since I already have owned one back in the 90's (one that I built) I decided to go with the ten-inch. A twelve inch was also in the mix but I decided to opt for a little more portability for my return to active observing.

I still haven't bought my first telescope, everytime I look there is a reccomendation for another scope and the circle continues. Frustrating to say the least.

Do the research and decide, then get one. Much like computers and cars, there will always be a newer/bigger/better/etc. one out there. If you're always following everyone's opinions, you'll never get your own, and you'll certainly never be satisfied.

You will love the view of the planets , jupiters belts and moons, a fantastic view of Saturns rings, the pale geeen disc of uranus (will be quite small), the different phases of Venus(use a filter because of brightness). You will see the polar cap on mars(again kind of small),and some deep sky that will blow you away like the Orion Nebula and to many more to mention. I love just slowly scanning a certain area of sky and running across a globular cluster or nebula and feel how incredible it is to see these objects.

The 8 inch dob is the great journeymen of modern telescopes. It can either give you a lifetime of viewing or a stepping stone to more specialized equipment as your tastes develop. One thing I will promise you - you wont be disappointed
