Default The Orion SkyQuest XTg 12 has arrived

Hey guys kinda late on my post been really busy. The scope came in on Thursday and I couldnt wait to get it put together. I work nights so I didnt get it together until around 4am ( Friday Morning ) so I didnt get a chance to take it out as bad as I wanted to. Friday night I picked up my son and the first thing we did was get that sucker out. The view of Saturn was awsom and the moon was almost to bright to look at. I think I need to look into a moon filter. LOL. Sunday we went out and bought a battery and I got it all set up. I got it set up and was moving the scope around with the hand controller. Set the scope outside about 45 minutes till dark and we were impaciently waiting for sunset. The time came and we all went out and I fired up the scope. Thats when I noticed somthing was wrong. The hand controler read "No Link to Mount....Stand Alone Mode". I couldnt get it to hook up to GPS or even slew it with the hand controler. I e-mailed Orion Sunday night and got a resopnce from them Monday about my problem. We exchanged e-mails on my cheap and slow Wal-Mart phone a few times while I was at work and they said that they can send me the two DOB base pannels that already have the motors installed on them if nessary. After e-mailing back and forth Orion agreed to send me a new hand controler with a free shipping box to send my old on back in. When I got home Monday night (actually Tuesday morning, remember I work nights) I already had a e-mail that the hand controler had shipped. Now that is great coustomer service. I am in no way trying to make Orion look bad. I am actually very happy with my scope and the quick response to my problem from Orion. Coustomer service was "one" of the reasons I went with Orion instead of another scope I concidered. I cant wait until I get this sucker finding objects and tracking them. Saturday I had 11 people over drooling and wowing at Saturn, but I had to adjust the scope after each view. It was alot easier manually tracking on my old celestron 76 eq with the slow motion cables, but a lot less detail in the eye piece. LOL. I cant wait to get this thing up and running. Ill keep yall posted.

It is really great to hear that Orion has that kind of customer service. Sometimes that can be missing with a manufacturer/retailer. Thanks for the report and definitely keep us posted!

Will keep you posted guys. I wanted to get the scope out after work, but we have cloud cover here in Houston. Will get back when the hand controler gets here Friday and will post Saturday morning early after work and hopefully after some viewing.

I have the XT12G and love it. I will be following this post to see how this works out for you.

And yes, you will most definitely want a moon filter (or variable polarizing filter) if you're gonna look at the moon. I also suggest saving the moon for the end of your observing sessions so you don't ruin you dark adaptation until after you've already looked at the faint stuff

In what way did it not work? Forgive me for asking this, but you didn't by chance reverse the polarity did you? That's the one thing I'm particularly paranoid about whenever I hook up my battery.
