Hi, i bought a N203 and had to send it back couldn't get it to focus esp with highr mags. I think it was a secondary mirror quality problem, but can't be sure. Just about to pick up a skywatcher explorer 8" HEQ5

Thanks for your message, and the approval on the skywatcher. I was a bit slow to catch onto these forums, where all the answers on what to buy are. So, have made some(not too big) financial mistakes on getting started. Luckily enough telescope house had the bresser back with no problem picked up the new skywatcher scope yesterday evening so waiting for first light!!! You're right it is big, but it's the HEQ5 mount that's the biggest part...

Struggling to find focus especially at higher mgnifications is the classic sign of a cheap 'spherical' mirror. Always look for the specs to quote a 'parabolic' mirror if not, don't buy.

I've also heard of some cheaper scopes using a piece of normal (back silvered) mirror for the diagonal instead of a proper optical (front-polished) mirror.

For good quality, at a fair price, stick with SkyWatcher, Meade, Celestron, TAL, Revelation, Konus.

Avoid Tasco, Optisan, Optron, Seben, Event Horizon, Bausch & Lomb, Bushnell, and generally anything that looks too good to be true.

Also watch out for cheap Celestrons and Meades, sold from a non-specialist dealer (places like Argos, Jessops etc) they licensed out their name to some cheap far eastern manufacturers. If you see one, check their website if the model isn't on there, it's not a proper Celestron/Meade.

Bresser are a funny one their refractors and binoculars are generally OK, but avoid anything with a mirror in it. Same goes for 'Phenix' It's a sad state of affairs, but the optics market is an absolute minefield to the uninitiated.

Bonesetter You will not be disappointed with a SkyWatcher Explorer I've had the 6" model for well over a year now it's excellent the 8" should be even better.

If you've never used a scope like this, be prepared it is HUGE!!!!!

Just done an A/B with the skywatcher 1200mm 8" DOB and the Skywatcher 8" 1000mm newt (HEQ5). I am interested in planets, and so did the testing on saturn tonight. Conclusion: the DOB won hands down! The planet stayed pin sharp up to 240x and even barlowed was pretty good, detail was superb. Very relaxed viewing. Disappointingly my new Explorer 200 simply doesn't give the same. Image didn't stand the same magnification, nowhere near as much detail, whiter, softer image!! What do i do Go for a refractor after all! AAARRHHHHH!!!!!!

Had the Explorer laser collumated before i bought it, and it was spot on, out of the box. I agree with you, the difference is only the focal length. Do you think this would make the big difference i'm seeing In the DOB, saturn would go bigger, and crisper, easier to focus, more colour in the cloud belts, cassini definition great views. I'll be talking to the shop tomorrow... what refractor do you use for your planetary viewing Appreciate your replys
