Default Guide to attach Telrad to Astromaster 114EQ

I want to buy this finder, but I am not convinced that I will be able to attach it properly to telescope. Has anyone managed to do that? Did you use risers? Short guide and result pictures would be appreciated

Apparently no one has ever tried to do that in these forums so I've decided to give it a try and purchased telrad and a 2" riser. The problem with the Astromaster 114EQ is that the telescope is "short" i.e. there is not enough space on Optical Tube to attach it.

As it can be seen the only obstacle is one of the tube rings. To overcome it I've decided to cut out a piece of telrad base so that it could fit between rings and outside them.

Don't forget to file sharp plastic edges! Telrad has to be perfectly aligned to central axis of optical tube. I've done that by marking a perpendicular to the edge of the tube line. As in the picture below:

The next thing you have to do is attach "pimped" base to a riser or a telrad (so that it would properly attach to a telescope) and glue both using double-sided tape on a base to telescope along the marked line (refer to the picture below).

And you're almost done! Now you have to erase the line you drew (assuming washable marker was used ) and attach your telrad! Below are final result pictures

I hope this "guide" helps you out!

I have Astromaster 114EQ as well, I am considering to buy Telrad, I am curious, how do you cut it? with knife? or power saw?

Is it easy to do, do you think I can do that too?

Hacksaw blade should do the trick. or if you dont want to go through that modification process you could buy a Rigel Quikfinder. I own both a Telrad and the Quiklfinder and love them both.

alright, where can I buy telrad and 2" riser because I don't want to order through internet because of shipping fee and the government billed me the shipping tax last time I ordered things from internet. I live near London, Ontario.

If it is impossible, then what best website to order it thanks

I have the same scope and ordered a telrad because numerous reviews suggested that a hammer was the best tool to use on the original sight. I removed it. Attached are photos showing my solution to mount the sight.

A nylon screw was inserted into the forward camera mount position. The board is 3/8 by 2x1/2 actual size. The tel-rad base is mounted with thumb-nuts, but I had to mount the thumb-nut on a threaded rod, then file it down using a drill to allow the thumb-nut to fit in the available clearance.

I mounted the sight a head of the optical tube because I found that I needed a lot of relief to see the entire reticule. I'm would like more still, and have trouble if the scope is pointed any where near vertical.
