Apologies for what's probably a terribly "beginner's question". We've just purchased a Celestron 76EQ and we're pretty pleased with it, but are having a little trouble using / working out the "Star Pointer" feature -- the little red dot gadget that's supposed to make pointing your telescope at something a doddle. From the manual ...
Quote:
The Star Pointer is the quickest and easiest way to point your telescope exactly at a desired object in the sky. It's like having a laser pointer that you can shine directly onto the night sky. The Star Pointer is a zero magnification pointing tool that uses a coated glass window to superimpose the image of a small red dot onto the night sky. While keeping both eyes open when looking through the Star Pointer, simply move your
telescope until the red dot, seen through the Star Pointer, merges with the object as seen with your unaided eye.

The problem I can't figure out is
from where does one sight through the Star Pointer? Obviously depending where one positions oneself relative to it will cause the dot to "appear" pointing at a different point in the sky (e.g. if one sights from the end of the tube, if one puts one's nose to the Star Pointer!) Couldn't even manage to hit the moon with it last night (see, said I'm a beginner!) I must be missing something totally obvious ... help!
Many thanks for any advice.
