Default Shout Out to Celestron Support !

Maybe a bit off-topic, but I just felt like I had to give Celestron a shout-out for Customer Support. Jonathan, Will...you guys are awesome! Particularly when you look at the circumstances of my request.

So I have bought and gifted more than a few scopes/misc. equipment over the past few years. I routinely go through Craigslist for example and pick up interesting equipment that becomes available. Last year, I picked up a couple different AstroMaster refractors (a 70 and a 90), as I was looking to give one to a special Executive Assistant at work (who I go way-way back with). I found a beautiful boxed 70 AZ, but the tripod leg spreader apparently had broken and the owner just tied a few pieces of wire to keep the legs somewhat tight. Then I found the 90AZ which had no box, but was in great shape. I swapped tripods and gave my friend a beautiful (albeit "used") little present in the 70, and she was just ecstatic!
This left me with a nice 90, but the tripod just bugs the crap out of me. I wasn't going to buy a new tripod for her; it was in great condition with the exception of the leg spreader, and this is my G&G scope of choice for those nights when I don't have much time, but still get out there in seconds! No way was I going to buy a new mount, when it needed just a few cheap plastic parts. These scopes were at least a few years old.

So I figured that I would write them, on the off chance that they might actually have parts for the mount. Never saw them on the web site. Figured it was a long-shot, but what the heck I figured. What is the worse that could happen, right? I fully expected the "we don't sell parts for that" as it is like the lowest version mount they have. They do use that mount for a lot of scopes though.

I wrote, asking if I could buy the spreader bar assembly, plus the plastic pieces to mount on the legs. Somehow, I think it might be a common problem. I told them that I had "real" equipment (e.g. AVX) but really wanted the G&G back in shape. They never asked for receipts, or serial numbers, or anything at all. I got an email asking where they could send the parts. No request for money at all, not even for shipping charges. I gave them my address, and I got another email today with UPS tracking info.

So is this how they are treating customers? I am still in a state of disbelief! Makes me wonder if I should have held-off on the Lightbridge (which now over three weeks after ordering, is still not back in stock) and bought an EdgeHD. I thought Meade turned the corner, when they got me parts for an ETX-90 (also a spreader-bar), but never expected Celestron to step-up like that.

Makes me feel a little better about buying my AVX mount. The experience will probably sway a future purchase decision
